# How do I answer customers after hours without a night shift?

You answer customers after hours by letting your published articles do the night shift. The chat widget answers from them at any hour, instantly and only from your words. Anything it cannot answer becomes a ticket with a timestamp and the customer email, and your reply reaches them by email in the morning, with the whole conversation attached.

## Why this happens

Customers do not keep office hours. Orders, sign-ups and problems happen at 11pm and on Sundays, and 90% of customers say an immediate response matters. A small company cannot staff that, and an auto-reply saying "we will get back to you" is not an answer.

Most night-time questions are the same as the daytime ones: where is my order, how do I reset this, what is the return window. Those have written answers. The night shift problem is mostly a delivery problem.

The remaining few need a person, and what they need most is to know someone will see it, and when.

## Steps

1. **Publish the ten answers that cover most questions.** They answer at 3am exactly as they answer at 3pm. That is the night shift.
2. **Put the widget on the site.** It answers from the articles at any hour. When nothing matches, it says so, takes the email and opens a ticket. The customer sees that the message was received, with your stated reply time.
3. **State your hours and reply time honestly.** A customer told "we reply within one business day" at midnight is fine. A customer told nothing is not. Set the message once.
4. **Reply in the morning from one queue.** Night tickets wait with timestamps, oldest first. Reply from the dashboard or from Slack or Discord, and the customer gets it by email even if they closed the chat.
5. **Add the night questions to the articles.** The ones that came in overnight and could not be answered are next week's articles. Over a month the night queue shrinks to the real problems.

## What to expect

**Instant for covered questions, morning for the rest.** This is not a 24-hour human desk. A customer with a problem your articles do not cover waits until you are in. The difference from an inbox is that they know it, and they know when.

**The AI will not improvise at night either.** It answers from articles or hands off. A confident wrong answer at 3am is the worst kind, because nobody catches it until morning.

**Ten free answers a month.** Enough to prove the night shift works. A site with nightly questions needs Pro at $29 a month flat, with 150 answers included.

## FAQ

### Does the customer know a person will follow up?

Yes. When the widget cannot answer, it says so, asks for an email if it does not have one, and confirms the message was received with your stated reply time. The ticket carries the timestamp and the full chat, so your morning reply reads like a continuation rather than a form response.

### Can I set different hours for different days?

Set the reply-time message to what is true, for example "within one business day, Monday to Friday". Customers forgive a stated wait; they do not forgive silence with no end date. If your hours change, change the sentence once and every after-hours conversation shows the new one from then on.

### What about urgent problems overnight?

Decide what urgent means for you and write it into the article: "If your account is locked, email security@ and we check it every morning at 8." The widget quotes that. If you want to be woken, connect Slack or Discord and set a notification on the support channel; every new ticket posts there as a thread.

### Will the AI answer differently at night?

No. It has no night mode and no mood. It answers from your published articles at any hour, and when nothing matches it hands off, exactly as it does during the day. The only thing that changes at night is that the handoff waits for you instead of reaching you at once.

### Is this really free?

The widget, ticketing, the public help center and ten AI answers a month are free, with no card and no time limit. Email replies to customers who started in the widget are included. Turning a support email address into tickets is Pro, at $29 a month flat for the workspace, when you need it.
