How do I write a help center article that AI search tools will quote?

The question

I run a small online business with a help center. When people ask ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews a question our articles answer, the AI quotes other sites instead of ours. How should one help article be written so AI tools pick it up and cite it? Please cover the title, the first paragraph, headings, length, and one short before-and-after example. Plain steps a non-developer can follow.

The accepted answer

Write one help center article so the title names the task, the first paragraph states the answer in plain language, short headings break the steps, and the piece stays long enough to cover the steps without padding.

Title: Use the exact question or task a reader would type, in everyday words. Prefer a full how-to or question line over a vague label. Weak: "Account access." Strong: "How to reset a password when email is unavailable."

First paragraph: In two to four sentences, put the outcome or answer first, then the condition that applies. That lead must make sense alone, because AI search tools often quote the opening block. Weak leads apologize, tease later sections, or talk about "options." Strong leads say what works and when.

Headings: Add a few short H2 or H3 lines that name a step or a decision, such as "When this applies," "Steps," and "If that fails." Keep one idea under each heading. Skip clever or branded headings that hide the topic.

Length: Cover one task only. A single how-to is usually a few hundred words—enough for the lead, the steps, and one failure path. Stop when the steps are clear. Do not pad with keyword lists or unrelated tips.

Before-and-after example of an article opening:

Before Title: Account access issues Opening: The product offers several options for people who have trouble signing in. See the sections below for more information about troubleshooting and related account topics.

After Title: How to reset a password when email is unavailable Opening: If the account email is unavailable, reset the password with a phone number already on file. Open Sign in, choose Forgot password, select Use phone number, enter that number, and confirm the one-time code. The new password works on the next sign-in.

Practical path with no paid tools: draft in the help center editor or a plain text file, write the after-style title and lead first, add two to four headed steps, read the opening aloud once to confirm it answers the title, then publish.

Do not rely on generic SEO tips with no example, do not treat the article as a product pitch, and do not invent statistics about how often AI tools quote pages.
