How do I handle the holiday support spike without hiring?
You handle the holiday support spike without hiring by moving the predictable questions off your team before the season starts. Write the ten answers shoppers will ask in December, publish them, and let the chat widget answer them at any hour. Your people then handle only the parcels that went wrong, which is the work that needs them.

Why does this keep happening?
The holiday spike is not new questions. It is the same five questions multiplied by order volume: when will it arrive, can I still order for Christmas, can I change the address, what is the return window for gifts, where is my parcel.
Hiring for six weeks does not work. A temp needs two weeks to learn the answers and leaves as the questions stop. Meanwhile 90% of customers say an immediate reply matters, and in December they mean it.
The only thing that scales to December is an answer that was written in October.
How do I fix it, step by step?
Pull last December's tickets and count
Export the questions from last year, or from your busiest week this year, and rank them. The top ten cover most of the volume. Those are the articles.
Write the ten answers with dates in them
Order-by dates per shipping method, gift return window, address change deadline, carrier cut-offs. Publish them as knowledge base articles by early November so they are live before the first rush.
Put the widget on every page, including the cart
Shoppers ask "will it arrive by the 24th" on the product page. The widget answers there, from your article, and the sale completes instead of waiting on an email.
Route only the exceptions to people
Lost parcels, damaged gifts, wrong items. These open tickets with the email and order details attached. One queue, with owners, so nothing is missed in the rush.
Update the articles weekly through December
Carrier cut-offs move. Change the date in the article and every answer changes with it. No retraining, no new macros.

What changes, and what does not?
It does not fix what went wrong in the warehouse
A lost parcel still needs a person and a carrier claim. The spike you remove is the asking, not the shipping.
The AI only knows the dates you gave it
If the order-by date changes and the article does not, the widget is wrong with confidence. Someone owns the articles through December, ten minutes a week.
Flat pricing, so the spike does not raise the bill
Plans are per workspace, not per seat or per resolution. The free plan has ten AI answers a month; a seasonal store usually needs Pro for December, at $29 a month, and can drop back after.
What else do people ask?
When should I set this up?
October. Writing ten articles takes an afternoon, the widget takes two minutes, and you want a quiet fortnight to see which questions still reach the inbox. Set up in December and you will be writing articles while the queue grows, which still works but is harder than it needs to be.
Can the AI answer "will it arrive by Christmas"?
Yes, from your article: "Orders placed by 18 December with standard shipping arrive by the 24th in the UK." It quotes your dates, so keep them current. It does not check a specific parcel; a shopper whose order is already late gets a ticket to a person with the order details attached.
What about questions in the middle of the night?
The widget answers at any hour from the published articles, which is when a lot of holiday shopping happens. Questions it cannot answer become tickets with a timestamp and the email, and the shopper gets your reply by email in the morning rather than wondering whether anyone saw the message.
Does this work across the store and our Discord or Slack?
Yes. The same articles power the website widget, the Discord bot and the Slack connection, all on the free plan with one server and one workspace. Your team can work the holiday queue from Slack threads if that is where they already are, and every reply still reaches the shopper.
Can I turn it down in January?
Yes. Plans are month to month with no contract. Many stores run Pro for November and December, then return to the free plan, keeping the articles and the widget. The answers stay live either way; only the monthly AI answer allowance and the email-to-ticket feature change when the plan does.
