Free plan limits

Here is everything the free plan includes and where the limits are, in one place. We'd rather you know them up front than discover them by surprise.

Article generation

The free plan is bring-your-own-key: you connect an API key from an AI provider (Gemini and Groq have free tiers; OpenAI, Anthropic, Moonshot AI (Kimi), OpenRouter, and a self-hosted Ollama model also work) and pay that provider directly, usually $0.01 to $0.08 per article or $0 on a free-tier key. Your key stays on your own WordPress site.

• Your first 30 articles per site are Cloud-assisted. SEOBetter's hosted service supplies the tuned writing prompt for each section and your own key writes the article. This is how free articles reach the same structure and quality as paid ones.
• After 30, the plugin's built-in engine takes over. New articles are still written on your key, with prompts built on your own server instead of the hosted service. Quality is a step below the Cloud-assisted output. Generation never stops, and the Generate page shows a notice the first time the switch happens.
• The 30 is lifetime per site, not monthly. It is counted per registered domain, so subdomains of one site share it. A failed job that you retry does not use an extra slot.
• Local and private sites (localhost, .local, .test, private IP addresses) use the built-in engine from the first article, and the Generate page says so.

A free Tavily research key is required to generate. It is what gives every article real, verifiable reference links; Tavily's free plan (1,000 searches a month) covers 100+ articles.

Content limits

• Content types: Blog Post, How-To, and Listicle. The other 18 types (Comparison, Buying Guide, Review, Case Study, Pillar Guide, Recipe, Press Release, and more) are Pro.
• Language: English only. Pro unlocks 29 languages.
• Target countries: United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Ireland. Pro covers 78 countries.
• Word count: 800 to 3,000 words, same as paid plans.
• AI providers: save as many as you like, with one active at a time.

What's fully free, no caps

• GEO Score and SEOBetter Score, including the suggestions list and Re-analyze. Scoring runs locally on your site.
• Schema generation on post save.
• Meta title and description sync to AIOSEO, Yoast, Rank Math, and SEOPress.
• Google Search Console connect and the per-post performance data.
• llms.txt (basic version: your 20 most recent posts) and the AI crawler audit.
• Images via Pexels: your own free Pexels key has no SEOBetter-side cap. Without a key you get a small monthly allowance from the shared cloud pool, then Openverse fallbacks.
• Places lookups with your own keys (OpenStreetMap is always on with no key at all).
• Brand colors for article theming.

Locked to paid plans

• Pro ($39/mo): 50 Cloud articles per month with no keys to manage, plus 300 articles a month on your own key with no allowance to watch, all 21 content types, 29 languages, 78 countries, Brand Voice (1 profile), AI featured images, Tavily-powered verbatim quotes, Firecrawl deep research, optimized llms.txt.

The honest summary: free is enough to test SEOBetter properly and publish 30 Cloud-assisted articles on your own key, then keep going on the built-in engine for as long as you like. If it earns its keep, Pro includes Cloud generation with no key to manage and removes the limits that matter.
